The Tantalus Project: Rugby / Ann Brain.

Ann Brain paints in a distinctive style which conveys a sense of mystery through images of the natural world. Her oil paintings, at times both benign and unsettling, remain in the mind’s eye long after other, blander images are forgotten. Now eight times a Royal Academy exhibitor, her paintings hang in collections in the UK, Europe and America. In her works on paper she uses her keen powers of observation to examine and record the actuality of objects in an acute and penetrating way. Ann was born in Coventry and grew up in the surrounding area of leafy Warwickshire. She attended Coventry College of Art, where she was taught by Terry Frost and Michael Sandle, gaining a degree in Fine Art in 1966, before going on to a post-graduate course at London University Institute of Education, followed by a successful teaching career. She has been working as a professional artist since 1998. Ann exhibits at The Gallery, Dunchurch, near Rugby . She is a founder member and former chairman of Rugby Artists’ Support Group, former chairman of the Association of Midland Artists, a member of the Tantalus Project, Leamington Studio Artists and Rugby and District Art Society. She holds an Open Studio every other year as part of Warwickshire Arts Week. A number of her paintings have been reproduced as greetings cards and fine art prints and she has recently been taken on by the Bridgeman Art Library, the leading source of fine art images. “Art is a mysterious business. I try to look at the world through innocent eyes and paint from the heart, and I hope that people will approach my work with similarly open eyes and minds.”
